Collaboration with the Milwaukee County Zoo & Zoological Society.
We’re going to the zoo and the animals sound great! Join as we collaborate with the Milwaukee County Zoo for a fun filled adventure. Each day we will visit a different branch of the zoo and base our activities around the animal’s unique characteristics. Sing songs, play percussion instruments, and create art projects for a musical backdrop to our zoo exploration.
Camp takes place at the Milwaukee County Zoo 10001 West Blue Mound Road, Milwaukee, Wisconsin, 53226. Parents are permitted access to drop-off and pick-up.

Each student will rotate (in small groups) at the Conservatory learning piano, cello, percussion, and a musicianship and rhythm skills class. At lunch time students will travel from the Conservatory to the Milwaukee Art Museum. Transportation will be provided. After lunch and a good stretch in the sunshine, each student will resume instrument sampling with Conservatory faculty on the recorder. The afternoon continues as the Milwaukee Art Museum faculty take students on gallery walks and introduce them to the correlations between music and art. At lunch time students will travel from the Conservatory in Bayside to the Lynden Sculpture Garden. Transportation will be provided. After lunch and a good stretch in the sunshine, each student will resume instrument sampling with Conservatory faculty on voice. The afternoon continues as the Lynden faculty introduces students to the local animals: both the sculptures and the living inhabitants. Students will explore the connections between art and nature each day as they create animal-inspired art, and learn a few animal songs, too. No experience necessary!

The Drum Set Camps will address the stylistic and technical demands of the drum set player through the musical styles of Jazz, Afro-Cuban, Brazilian, Funk and Rock. Topics of study include four-way coordination, rudimental application to the drum set, chart reading, mixed meters, soloing, feel, time development, analysis of recordings/transcription, developing practical practice methods, and more. After a great morning spent learning and exploring in Piano Camp, take a break and eat your bag lunch with your new friends, followed by a visit to our music library. With your mind and body refreshed, seize the opportunity to take two 30-minute lessons with a Wisconsin Conservatory of Music faculty member, along with sessions for practicing. Next, students will have the opportunity to receive instruction on different types of keyboard instruments such as the marimba, xylophone, and vibraphone. Students will develop a more rhythmic sense, gain an insight into the technique and coordination that is required, and benefit from the transfer of skills involved between playing a keyboard percussion instrument and playing the piano. The day concludes with a relaxing yet informative session on piano composers and the music that they wrote on two of the afternoons and a performance class on the other afternoons. Students will either perform or sit in on a Performance / Master Class with other campers while receiving insights into piano technique, musicianship, interpretation, and performance tips in our beautiful Helen Bader Recital Hall.

Join us for five 5 full days of instrument investigation and nature exploration! Each morning starts at the Wisconsin Conservatory of Music for group instruction on instruments. Each student will rotate (in small groups) at the Conservatory learning guitar, voice, violin, and musicianship through Orff instruments and methodology. At lunch time students will travel from the Conservatory to the Urban Ecology Center. Transportation will be provided by the UEC. After lunch and a good stretch in the sunshine at the Riverside Park, each student will resume instrument sampling with Conservatory faculty on the hand drums. The afternoon continues with programming at Riverside Park and the music found in nature. The Urban Ecology Center staff will help students learn how composers portray the natural world in their music, play nature-inspired instruments such as didgeridoos and ocean drums and lead discovery hikes. This camp is not to be missed by the serious band musician. Come have a great week making music with other students your own age that love band! Each day players participate in two full band rehearsals, master classes, and electives, including improvisation, Samba and African drumming, piano, and more. You’ll also be treated to a daily concert by a professional performing ensemble. The camp culminates in a final performance on Friday afternoon. Students will be placed into bands based on playing level. Special scholarships available for MPS students.
