Master Classes

A master class is a
class given to students of a particular discipline by an expert, the quintessential "master." Master classes are an educational staple in music, dance, drama, painting, photography, writing, and other forms of art.

The Conservatory has a rich history of providing master class opportunities to our students as a way of building their skills and knowledge, and are open to the community.

Master classes
are added throughout the semester, so be sure to check this page often.

All
master classes are held in the Helen Bader Recital Hall at 1584 North Prospect Avenue unless otherwise noted. Most are free and open to the public, but seating is limited.

Greg Koch Master Class: Hybrid Hijinx
Wednesday, March 7, 2012 | 7:30pm

GregKoch_72-(1).jpg Hybrid picking and musical hybridization—Chickin' pickin', Travis pickin', finger pickin', flat pickin' over a blues, country, rock, funk and jazz cauldron of doom! Standard tuning slide, blues phrasing and scalar diversions will also be touched on. Come one and all or admit defeat!

"Incredible musician? Check. Funnier than most comics? Check. Filled with great Dad and Husband stories? Check. And, at 6' 7", Greg 'Rhymes with Chalk' Koch is living proof that great things don't always come in small packages. I've been hosting morning radio shows for 25+ years and there's literally no one that connects with our audience like Greg."

Laurence Juber Guitar Master Class (former guitarist of Wings): Beatles, Wings and Six Strings
Tuesday, May 15, 2012
| 7:30pm

Juber.jpg This workshop covers arranging and performing for Fingerstyle Guitar and encourages a musical approach to the guitar with technique and performance skills integrated organically into the presentation. Topics covered include: articulating a 'singing' melody; developing texture, bass-lines, harmonies and voicing; finding the "groove." Altered tunings and fresh ways of looking at standard tuning are explored, using examples from the Beatles, Pop and Standard repertoire, as well as familiar traditional melodies and Laurence Juber's own compositions.

There is an emphasis on both left and right hand fingering in regard to tone production and technical efficiency. Lots of useful information, interactivity and fun! Knowledge of theory is not essential.

$5.00 general admission / Free for Conservatory students.
